How To Determine If A Pneumatic Rib Drill Requires Maintenance?

Oct 27, 2025|

1. Abnormal Noise or Vibration
If the drill produces metallic friction sounds, knocking sounds, or abnormal vibrations during operation, it may indicate worn gearbox bearings or loose internal parts in the pneumatic motor.
Inspection method: Close the water valve during the no-load test and listen to the motor sound to check for smooth operation.
2. Reduced Power or Abnormal Speed
If the air pressure is normal but the speed is slow, it may be due to clogged exhaust ports or insufficient lubrication leading to oil film breakdown.
Verification steps: Measure the actual air pressure 5 meters from the air inlet. If it is below 0.4MPa, check for air leaks in the air line or compressor malfunction.
3. Lubrication System Failure
Insufficient oil output from the lubricator (standard is 2-3 ml per minute) or no oil in the oil cup will cause dry friction in the pneumatic motor.
Maintenance tip: Check the oil level before each shift and use 30# machine oil or #3 lithium-based grease.
4. Drill Bit and Drill Rod Problems
If the drill bit alloy inserts fall off, the drill rod is bent, or the center hole does not conduct water, it needs to be replaced immediately.
Preventive measures: Regularly check the hexagonal size of the drill rod (e.g., 19mm) and the wear of the drill bit.
5. Air and Water Line Blockage
Water accumulation in the air pipe or unclean water quality can cause ice formation in the exhaust port or blockage in the water line, resulting in the drill stopping or poor slag removal.
Solution: Drain accumulated water before operation, clean the filter screen, and maintain water pressure at 0.6-1.2MPa.
6. Appearance and Sealing Inspection
Cracks in the casing, air leaks in the air pipe (detected with soapy water), or aging seals all require timely attention.
Suggested Maintenance Schedule
Daily: Clean debris, check oil level and air pressure.
Weekly: Disassemble and clean the air valve, check gearbox bearings.
Monthly: Replace seals, clean the oil tank (if it is a hydraulic assisted model).
